The Department of Physical Education of Beijing Language and Culture University (a.k.a. mini UN) is the university's sports committee. It is responsible for all physical education on campus. Developed out of the office of physical research & teaching, the Department of Physical Education was established on March 26, 2002, and currently has 14 teachers. It has an administrative office, a physical education and teaching and research office, a group competition teaching and research office, an international student teaching and research office and a scientific research management office. Together, they are fully responsible for all physical education, research, and group competition for Chinese and foreign students.
As the university becomes more and more internationalized, the Department of Physical Education grows stronger and stronger. It advances the idea of combining the physical education of Chinese and foreign students, and requires teachers to be specialized as well as versatile. All teachers undertake 2-3 physical courses. It offers compulsory courses such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, tennis, badminton, table tennis, swimming, tai chi, Long Fist Kung Fu, fencing, nunchucks, and Wing Chun to Chinese students. For international students, it provides courses like tai chi, Long Fist Kung Fu, sparring, fencing, Wing Chun, nunchucks, soccer, and tennis in forms of elective courses, training courses, experience classes, and sports appreciation classes. Three teachers from the department won the university's second prize award for excellent teaching, and one won the first prize award for basic teaching skills.
Various student sports organizations (clubs) and school sports training delegations are important supplements and extensions of physical education. They have greatly enriched sports activity for Chinese and foreign students, and have created opportunities for them to communicate while playing sports and exercising together. For foreign students, the department aims to educate them about China's excellent sports culture so as to improve their understanding about China. It helps them to accept, integrate into, and promote China after returning to their home countries. These foreign students can play an active role in fostering friendship between people and developing economic and trade relations between two countries. The Department of Physical Education was twice awarded as an excellent school in the evaluation of Regulations on Physical Education of Beijing Universities; It also won twice the title of winning school in the Sunshine Cup of Capital Universities; and in 2018, it was named as a winning school in the Chaoyang Cup.
