Contemporary Comparative Literature is a comprehensive academic journal published by Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), managed by BLCU’s Institute of Comparative Literature, and co-sponsored by the Chinese Comparative Literature Association, a national first-tier academic society. Its mission is to “integrate Chinese and foreign perspectives, bridging the ancient and modern,” focusing on cutting-edge topics and discussions in humanities and social sciences centered on comparative literature and world literature. The current editor-in-chief is Professor Rong nv Chen.
Founded in 2017, the journal is published biannually. It is one of the leading journals in China for comparative literature, world literature, and cross-cultural studies. In 2023, it was included in the Core Journal category of the AMI Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2024, it was recognized as a “High-Impact Academic Journal” by CNKI, ranking in the top 25% (Q1) of literature journals. The journal prioritizes digital development and is fully indexed in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the National Philosophy and Social Sciences Documentation Center, Wanfang Data, and the Virtual Library of Chinese Academic Journals, integrating its academic content into a comprehensive digital academic network.
The journal’s main columns include: “New Insights into Ancient Studies,” “Classical Studies,” and “Renaissance Studies,” which explore Chinese and foreign classics in literature, history, and philosophy from a contemporary perspective; “Classics and Interpretation,” “New Translations of Classics,” “Shakespeare Studies,” and “Dario Fo Studies,” focusing on reinterpretation of humanities and social sciences classics; and “Cross-Cultural Drama,” “Cross-Cultural Studies of Mei Lanfang,” “Cross-Media Studies of Drama and Film,” “Studies of Chinese and Foreign Scholars,” “Sinology Studies,” and “Academic Interviews,” emphasizing comparative and cross-cultural perspectives.
Dedicated to balancing tradition and innovation, Contemporary Comparative Literature roots its academic advancements in the interpretation and study of Chinese and foreign classics in literature, history, philosophy, and social sciences, fostering a robust academic spirit. Its contemporary perspective is reflected in addressing cutting-edge issues, promoting research that reflects on modernity through the lens of ancient-modern comparisons.
