Documentary Linguistics is an academic journal co-published by Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and Chung Hwa Book Company. Guided by the mission of “analyzing linguistic phenomena based on factual evidence and studying the history of the Chinese language through documentary sources,” the journal emphasizes the integration of original documentary materials with innovative research methodologies. It focuses on the exploration and utilization of unearthed documents, transmitted texts, and overseas Chinese manuscripts, creating an interdisciplinary research platform. The current editor-in-chief is Professor Xuecheng Hua.
Founded in 2015, Documentary Linguistics is published biannually. Since 2021, it has been consistently included in the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) source journal catalogue, and in 2023, it was selected as a core journal in the inaugural AMI Comprehensive Evaluation of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Journals. The print edition adopts a paperback format with traditional Chinese characters in horizontal layout, and its academic influence extends to universities and research institutions worldwide, with citation frequency ranking among the top in linguistics journals.
Documentary Linguistics prioritizes original research, covering areas such as theories and methodologies of documentary linguistics, Chinese characters and their history, exegesis and lexical history, phonology and phonetic history, grammar and grammatical history, regional colloquialisms and dialect history, and the history of language and linguistics. It also publishes research reviews on academic hotspots, book reviews of influential scholarly works, purely academic debates or critical discussions on significant topics, and valuable documentary linguistics research materials. Since 2018, the journal has maintained a regular “Young Scholars Forum” to support the development of emerging researchers.
