BEIJING, Jan. 20, 2026 — Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) and Ghana have taken a major step forward in educational and cultural cooperation following a high-level meeting in Beijing.

On January 19, BLCU President Duan Peng welcomed a Ghanaian delegation led by Augustus Obuadum Tano, an advisor to Ghana’s president and head of the country’s 24-Hour Economy Secretariat. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding involving BLCU, the Secretariat, and the Ghana Tourism Authority.

In his welcome remarks, President Duan highlighted the 66 years of diplomatic relations between China and Ghana and acknowledged Ghana’s decision to include Chinese in its national education system. As China’s only university under the Ministry of Education dedicated to language studies, BLCU is eager to build partnerships with Ghanaian institutions, Duan said. Key areas of cooperation include “Chinese + Vocational” training programs (combining Chinese language learning with practical skills), youth exchanges, and joint academic research.

Tano emphasized that human capital development is essential to Ghana’s long-term transformation. "Without language and culture as a bridge, it is difficult to achieve deeper trade cooperation or lasting peace," he said. He also expressed interest in working with BLCU on digital literacy, cultural awareness programs, and potential collaboration at BLCU’s Hainan International Campus.

The delegation also visited a Chinese-plus-vocational class at BLCU’s School of Applied Chinese Studies, took part in a traditional tea ceremony, and experienced traditional Chinese medicine demonstrations. They met with Ghanaian students studying at BLCU, where Tano encouraged them to act as cultural bridges between the two nations. He inscribed on a traditional painting: "China-Ghana Friendship Lasting Forever."

The visit helped advance mutual understanding and cooperation in education, culture, and youth engagement, laying a solid foundation for stronger China-Ghana relations in the future.
