President Duan Peng Meets with Former Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome

On the morning of May 31, Duan Peng, President of Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), met with His Excellency Dr. Mulatu Teshome, former President of Ethiopia and a distinguished BLCU alumnus, who was visiting to attend the World Sinologists Conference. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on deepening China-Africa educational cooperation and promoting dialogue among civilizations.

On behalf of BLCU, President Duan extended a warm welcome to His Excellency Dr. Mulatu Teshome upon his return to his alma mater. He noted that since its founding, BLCU has trained more than 300,000 international professionals. President Duan praised Dr. Mulatu Teshome as one of the university’s most outstanding alumni, highlighting his long-standing commitment to China-Ethiopia friendship and China-Africa educational cooperation. He stated that BLCU will continue to expand the scope of talent exchange between China and Ethiopia. The university aims to develop a multidisciplinary talent cultivation model integrating “Language + Specialization + International Vision” to foster more high-caliber professionals suited to China-Africa economic, trade, educational, and cultural sectors. Furthermore, by leveraging the Innovation Center for World Sinology Discourse Competence, BLCU plans to deepen academic dialogue in Sinology between China and Africa, thereby contributing to mutual learning among civilizations.

Dr. Mulatu Teshome spoke highly of BLCU’s pivotal role in international Chinese language education and friendly exchanges between China and foreign nations. He expressed full alignment with the cooperation initiatives and pledged his ongoing support for the development of his alma mater. The former president committed to helping African youth study in China, supporting the construction of the Innovation Center for World Sinology Discourse Competence, and fostering China-Africa Sinology exchanges to advance educational connectivity and academic interaction between the two regions. Following the meeting, Dr. Mulatu Teshome accepted an invitation to serve as a Senior Advisor to the BLCU Innovation Center for World Sinology Discourse Competence.
