To enrich campus cultural life and showcase the charm of English drama, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) hosted the 19th English Short Play Competition on May 29. Six teams took to the stage, presenting youthful reflections from diverse perspectives and delivering a theatrical feast that blended profound ideas with artistic appeal for the audience.
The plays featured a wide range of themes and styles, including sci-fi, realistic stories, humanistic care, and growth education.
Team Starry People staged Under the Same Stars. Set against the vast universe, the play depicts encounters and dialogues across time and space, exploring a shared future for human civilization.
The Unspoken by Team Her Voice delicately portrays the subtle yet genuine emotional bonds between people that often go unspoken.
The Can’t-Think-of-a-Name Team presented The Flower of Tangdi, telling a touching story of two generations of medical practitioners carrying forward the same spirit through decades, interpreting the meaning of life, responsibility, and dedication.
The Opaque, performed by Team PINK OPAQUE, focuses on young urban dwellers. It illustrates how outsiders gain mutual understanding and find themselves amid dissonance, reflecting choices and growth between marginality and reality.
Set in a futuristic world, Wrong Voice by Team Full Reciters explores conflicts between artificial intelligence and human free will, provoking thoughts on technological advancement and human values.
Team Little Jasmine brought Jasmine, themed on “One Shared Voice” Through a heartfelt story between teachers and students, the play highlights the warmth inherited in education and cultural communication.
After all performances, judge Ms. Kelsey delivered comprehensive comments. She praised the teams for their thoughtful storylines and wonderful acting, and offered valuable suggestions to inspire students’ future drama creation and English practice.
The exciting award ceremony followed. Winners of various categories were announced after thorough evaluation. Award-winning teams and individuals stepped onto the stage one after another, celebrating their achievements amid warm applause and cheers. Every honor, whether for script writing or stage performance, embodied the participants’ dedication and passion.
All troupes won rounds of applause with fluent English, vivid character portrayal and creative stage design. From philosophical reflections on AI in futuristic tales to sincere depictions of family bonds, friendship and dreams in real-life stories, the students demonstrated solid academic competence and vibrant youthful spirit through their unique artistic interpretations.
Different stories intertwined on stage, and diverse voices echoed under the spotlight. As echoed by the event theme Same Voice, people may have varied life experiences and ways of expression, yet the pursuit of sincerity, understanding, love, and growth unites us all.
