The Malta Research Center of Beijing Language and Culture University was established in July 2017. In response to the national call for strengthening regional and country studies and deepening cultural exchanges between China and other countries, the center was registered with the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of the Ministry of Education. It is jointly established and managed by the Secretariat for Country and Regional Studies of the Ministry of Education and Beijing Language and Culture University, with its primary operations based at the Business School (Economic Research Institute) of Beijing Language and Culture University. Leveraging the university’s profound foundation in language and culture, its internationalized approach to education, and the Business School’s expertise in economics, management, and other business-related disciplines, the center conducts in-depth research on the economy, politics, culture, and related fields of Malta and other Mediterranean countries. It aims to explore collaboration opportunities and strives to become a leading domestic platform for Malta and Mediterranean studies, promoting economic, cultural, and multifaceted exchanges and cooperation between China and Mediterranean countries such as Malta. The center also serves China’s broader "Belt and Road" initiative and contributes to the overall landscape of international cooperation.

The center has long been engaged in multidimensional and in-depth research and exchange initiatives. In the field of academic research, it focuses on Malta's history, culture, language, politics, economy, and other aspects, delving into its unique developmental trajectory and inherent patterns, and has produced a series of influential academic achievements.
