The Research Center for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, established by Beijing Language and Culture University, is a specialized research institution dedicated to frontline international Chinese language educators. It was founded in April 2009 as one of the first ten research bases for the international promotion of Chinese language designated by the former Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters (now the Center for Language Education and Cooperation under the Ministry of Education). The center has consistently focused on the research and practice of the "Three Teachings" (teachers, teaching materials, and teaching methods), continuously innovating teaching philosophies. By leveraging modern information technology and market advantages, it develops teaching methodologies, educational resources, and teacher training models tailored to the evolving needs of overseas Chinese language education in the new era.
Additionally, the center places great emphasis on talent cultivation and development in international Chinese language education, providing a platform for experts and scholars from both China and abroad to exchange ideas. To date, it has organized numerous academic events, including three sessions of the "International Chinese Teaching Materials Construction and Innovation" Academic Symposium, four sessions of the "Chinese for Specific Purposes Education" Academic Symposium, six sessions of the "Summer Advanced Workshop on International Chinese Education," and the 8th Annual Conference of the Asia-Pacific Association for Teaching Chinese as an International Language, among other international and domestic academic activities. The center has also hosted over 20 "Academic Lectures by Domestic and International Experts" and more than 60 "Academic Salons," significantly promoting academic exchange in the field of international Chinese language education.
The International Chinese Language Education Research Base has hosted over 50 resident researchers to date. During their tenure, these resident scholars have led more than 30 research projects related to international Chinese education, including initiatives funded by the National Social Science Fund, major projects from the Key Research Bases of the Ministry of Education, and significant programs from the Center for Language Education and Cooperation under the Ministry of Education. They have also published over 20 sets of international Chinese language textbooks. For instance, the "Experiencing Chinese Course Series" has released revised editions and localized versions such as the German and Thai editions. The "HSK Standard Course Series," published since 2014, has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, generating extensive social impact. Additionally, numerous academic achievements have been publicly published, and a wealth of teaching resources, such as demonstration courses and MOOCs (e.g., "Teaching Methods for Elementary Comprehensive Chinese"), have been developed. The base has also created foundational resources like the "Chinese Pinyin Knowledge Point Query System (http://47.94.155.105:9604/#/)," the "Textbook-Based Chinese Grammar Point Query System (http://47.94.155.105:9600/)," and the "Hanfeng Phonetics Teaching and Learning Platform (https://phonetic.hfbook.cn)." Among these, the upgraded "Chinese Pinyin Knowledge Point Query System" has been renamed the "Comprehensive Mandarin Test Phonetics Resource (https://szyb.smartedu.cn/hypy/)."
