The Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) Library was established in 1962, with a total building area of nearly 12,000 square meters, divided into the main library and a branch library. The main library is located on the northwest side of the central campus intersection, while the branch library is situated in the basement and first floor of Teaching Building 1. The library offers over 1,200 reading seats, 23 study rooms, one Rixin Lecture Hall (multifunctional auditorium), and one rare books exhibition hall. It is open to all faculty and students.
The main library building was completed in May 1992, covering an area of 9,870 square meters, and underwent renovation completed in March 2021, presenting a fresh new appearance. The renovated main library adopts a traditional Chinese architectural style, fully highlighting BLCU's distinctive focus on international Chinese education and Chinese cultural education, allowing students to experience the elegance and solemnity of Chinese culture during their studies. The building materials feature elegant yellow wood, captivating wave patterns, and textured concrete panels, creating an ancient yet substantial aesthetic that seamlessly integrates with the traditional Chinese style. Circular framed views combined with ancient-style screens evoke a subtle, refined elegance, embodying Confucian charm and Zen philosophy. Variations of the character “语” (language) in different forms, fonts, and languages appear throughout the spaces as a unifying architectural symbol, distilled from the university motto “Virtue and Words for a Harmonious World.” Following the renovation, the main library upholds the service philosophy of “people-oriented and user-first,” with thoughtful consideration for readers in spatial layout, environment creation, facility provision, and service delivery.
The library's print book collection totals around 900,000 volumes, including approximately 80,000 ancient books and about 60,000 bound periodicals. It subscribes to 4,231 Chinese journals and 905 foreign-language journals. In line with the university's teaching and research characteristics, the library has acquired and developed various electronic resources.
