BLCU News, March 20 (Correspondent Geng Cong, Photographer Wei Da) – On the afternoon of March 19, President Duan Peng met with Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Majintha Jayesinghe and his delegation.
President Duan Peng extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe, a BLCU alumnus, on his return to his alma mater. He highlighted that since its founding, the university has trained 300,000 international alumni proficient in Chinese and familiar with Chinese culture, including nearly 200 Sri Lankan students. BLCU has cultivated numerous distinguished ambassador alumni, such as Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe, Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov, and Cuban Ambassador to China Pedroso. President Duan introduced recent developments at the university, noting its three overseas branches in Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Japan, as well as 27 Confucius Institutes (Classrooms), positioning it as a key window for China's foreign language education and cultural exchanges. President Duan expressed respect for the ambassador's substantial efforts as a seasoned diplomat in education and mutual learning among civilizations. He affirmed that the university will actively implement the consensus on deepening educational cooperation reached by the leaders of both countries during the Sri Lankan President's state visit to China this year, strengthening university and research institution exchanges, talent cultivation, and people-to-people friendship between the two nations.
Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe expressed sincere gratitude for President Duan Peng's warm reception, noting that returning to his alma mater felt heartwarming and evoked fond memories of his studies and life at BLCU. He highlighted the deep friendship between China and Sri Lanka and praised his alma mater's contributions to promoting educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries, expressing pride. He hoped to continue advancing educational cooperation and cultural exchanges with BLCU to inject vitality into the friendly relations between the two nations.
Subsequently, Director Xu Baofeng of BLCU's Center for World Sinology introduced the construction of the BLCU World Sinologists Council and overseas branches of the Sinology Center. Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on possibilities for Sinologist exchanges and collaborative research in Sinology. Relevant personnel from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange participated in the meeting.
