The Beijing Language Society was established on June 18, 1980, and is under the administration of the Beijing Federation of Social Science Circles.
The Beijing Language Society was initiated on April 20, 1979, by five distinguished linguists—Lu Zongda, Zhang Zhigong, Hu Mingyang, Zhang Shoukang, and Xu Tongqiang. Following the proposal, the initiative gained widespread support from language professionals across various fields in Beijing. Over fifty linguists, including Hu Yuzhi, Ye Shengtao, Wang Li, Lü Shuxiang, Zhou Zumo, Fu Maoji, Zhou Youguang, Ma Xueliang, Ni Haishu, and Xu Guozhang, endorsed the proposal and agreed to co-initiate the society. The inaugural meeting of the initiators was subsequently held on July 23, 1979.
The Beijing Language Society is dedicated to implementing the principle of "letting a hundred flowers bloom and a hundred schools of thought contend," uniting language science workers in Beijing to carry out academic activities, promote theoretical research in language science and applied studies of language and script, advance the modernization of language and script, facilitate international academic exchanges, popularize knowledge of language science, study language teaching, and promote the Party's language policies.
