Established in November 2011, the Institute of Language Resources (ILR) was initially called the Institute of Linguistics. It stemmed from the Institute for Language Teaching, and is now a linguistic research department under direct BLCU management. After the Academy of Linguistics was founded in October 2013, the Institute of Languages changed its name in favor of Institute of Language Resources.
The ILR has promoted the development of research on linguistics, applied linguistics, and Chinese language and characters, putting its shoulder to the wheel to further progress BLCU academics.
The ILR has completed many social sciences research projects, including the Linguistic Atlas of Chinese Dialects which was ordered by China’s Ministry of Education as part of the tenth five-year plan, and the National Audio Database Building, a key program of the eleventh five-year plan about national language and character application. The ILR has published a number of books, including Chinese Dialects Atlas, Survey Manual of the Chinese Dialects Atlas, Research on the Pronunciation of the Wu Dialect, Dictionary of the Jixi Dialect, The History of Checked Tone in the Beijing Dialect, Research on Beijing Mandarin, etc. Hundreds of its journals and papers can be found in key publications both at home and abroad, such as Studies of The Chinese Language, Dialects, and Language Teaching and Linguistic Studies. In addition, the ILR has developed a recording software named “BYLY”, two research systems called “BJKY”, and the Manuscript Query System, which is used to query the spoken words and manuscripts of the Beijing dialect.
The ILR is now shifting its research focus to make better use of BLCU’s academic advantages, and to support the development of BLCU. The priority for the ILR now and in the near future is to organize and carry out work related to the Preservation of Chinese Language Resources project given by the Center for the Protection and Research of Chinese Language Resources and the Managing Department of Language and Characters of the Ministry of Education.
